Clark Outdoor Releases 2-Person Camping Hammock

New design is the first to sleep two people comfortably in a lightweight, suspended shelter

Salt Lake City – Clark Outdoor Products has announced the release of the Clark VERTEX, the first lightweight camping hammock designed to sleep two people comfortably. A patent is pending on the design.

The Clark VERTEX features two independent hammock beds that are separated by a large storage area, and completely enclosed by mosquito netting which can be zipped down and folded away. The hammock also features the largest rain fly Clark has produced, made from a waterproof sil-nylon. Like all Clark hammocks, the VERTEX offers a built-in stuff bag system so that backpackers can carry the 4 lbs. 14 oz. system in a compact package (about 20 X 7.5 X 5.5 inches). The VERTEX can come with a WeatherShield, a zippered nylon enclosure that turns the hammock into a true tent. The VERTEX hangs from three trees or supports rather than the two supports most hammocks require.

Below you will find answers to basic questions about the new Clark VERTEX hammock:

Q. Is the VERTEX just a really big hammock?

A. No. The Clark VERTEX includes two hammock beds that are independent of one another. That means that if you get up in the middle of the night, the other person won’t even feel it. Toss and turn all you want, it won’t bother the other occupant. You also won’t knock elbows because of the storage area that separates the beds. This independence and separation is achieved by hanging the hammock from 3 supports.

There are some hammocks on the market that claim to be made for two people. However, these hammocks have only one bed which forces the two people into one lump. Even if you are with your significant other and wish to be close together, this is not a comfortable way to sleep. The VERTEX allows enough separation for sleeping comfortably. You are separated enough that you don’t need to have a “special” relationship with the other occupant to share the hammock. Two buddies will not feel awkward.

Q. Is it hard to hang a hammock from 3 trees instead of 2?

A. It’s not much more challenging to hang a hammock from three trees. If you camp where there are many options for hanging a standard hammock, then you shouldn’t have any problem hanging the VERTEX. The VERTEX ropes are extra long to help you adapt to the spacing of tree supports. Check out several different ways to hang the VERTEX.

Q. Does the VERTEX set up on the ground?

A. Yes. However, we recommend that you always hang the VERTEX when possible.

Q. What is special about the new VERTEX rain fly?

A. Like all of our rain tarps, the VERTEX rain fly is a waterproof sil-nylon. Unlike our other rain flys, the VERTEX fly does not attach directly to the hammock body. You can deploy your rain fly and then set up the hammock underneath it. When you pack up your hammock, the rain fly can be packed inside the hammock’s built-in stuff bag, or it can be packed in someone else’s pack.

Q. Is there room for my backpack and gear inside the VERTEX hammock?

A. Yes. Both occupants should have plenty of room to store their backpack and gear in the VERTEX hammock. Storage pockets underneath the hammock hold boots and other wet or dirty items you may not wish to bring inside.

Q. What is the weight limit on the VERTEX hammock?

A. We recommend a 300 lbs. safety weight limit for each hammock bed. We recommend a 200 lbs. safety weight limit for the center storage area. Be aware that we have tested the hammock to hold many times these safety limits. Each of the hammock’s ropes hold 1200 lbs. and the fabric is at least as strong as the rope. By following our safety guides, you will protect yourself and extend the life of your hammock.

Q. Are there other ways to use the VERTEX hammock?

A. If you wish, you can position yourself across the hammock horizontally or diagonally rather than inside one hammock bed. For example, when you lay across horizontally, the hammock flattens to make one large hammock bed. You can sleep any way you find comfortable as long as you observe our safety weight limit guidelines (see previous question).
